Ingredients
Sift together:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • ¼ tsp. salt
Bring to a boil and boil 2 minutes
  • 1 1/2 sticks butter (3/4 cup)
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 Tblsp. cocoa
  • Pour hot mixture over dry ingredients and mix well.
Add:
  • 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • Mix well:
  • Beat 2 egg whites and gently fold into batter.
  • Pour batter into an ungreased jelly roll pan.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes, or until cake springs back when touched.
Frosting
  • 1/2 stick butter (1/4cup), melted
  • 2 Tblsp. cocoa
  • 4 Tblsp. milk
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • Mix up the frosting just as the cake comes out of the oven, so it’s gooey and spreads easily over the hot cake. Sprinkle with nuts as desired. Cake may appear spongy, it’s perfect!
