¾ cup dried cherries - soak in 1 cup boiling water for 10 minutes, drain
In a large bowl, mix:
3 cups flour
1 Tblsp. baking powder
½ tsp. cream of tartar
3 Tblsp. sugar
½ tsp. salt
In a small bowl, mix:
½ cup butter, softened
½ cup sour cream
1 egg yolk, beaten
1 tsp. almond extract
¾ cup half & half
♦ Add cream mixture to flour mixture. Stir to form soft dough.
♦ Turn onto lightly floured surface and knead 6-8 times.
♦ Knead in cherries.
♦ Cut dough in half, shape each half into a ball.
♦ Roll or gently pat each ball into a 6-inch circle and set on a lightly greased baking sheet.
♦ Cut each circle into 6 wedges and slide wedges apart slightly.
♦ Beat egg white until foamy and brush tops of each scone. Sprinkle with sugar.
♦ Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Serve warm.
